AT&T’s 5G Reduced Capability (RedCap) technology has achieved nationwide coverage in the USA, now serving over 200 million points of presence (POPs) across the country. 5G RedCap is intended for use by devices that consume less battery, have lower costs, and require lower bandwidth—such as wearables, XR glasses, and a wide range of Internet of Things (IoT) products for healthcare, asset tracking, industrial sensors, fleet management, and other mid-speed computing applications.
RedCap is a native 5G technology that supports a streamlined subset of 5G capabilities and is targeted at devices that need more bandwidth than LTE-M or NB-IoT, such as IoT and wearables. RedCap devices can enable reduced manufacturing costs and more compact form factors by using fewer antennas, lower processing power, less battery consumption, and simplified radio frequency components compared to full 5G devices. AT&T works with module providers such as Semtech, Telit Cinterion, and Rhino Mobility to certify new RedCap modules.
The Franklin Wireless RG350 mobile hotspot is the first commercially approved 5G RedCap product on the AT&T nationwide network.
