Big data, the Industrial Internet, and blown minds....

Many industrial companies don't really understand what big data is or why they should care - 38% of them according to a survey I ran last summer.  But it's increasingingly clear that for these firms big data is, in practice, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).  Consider IIoT in terms of the classic big data 3 V's - Volume, Velocity and Variety (as first defined by Doug Laney at Gartner).

In the time it takes you to read this sentence, the engines on all the Boeing 787’s in flight at this moment will have generated 8.3m data points.  That's an incredible velocity of data to harness - and an incredible volume of data to store and manage in the long-term.  It's a huge challenge to be sure - and that's why in 2015 my corner of ARC's IIoT practice is going to focus on helping companies collect, manage, and analyze their IIoT data to ensure they gain value from it.
