Big Data for Industry

Executive Overview
There's a lot of mystery over big data. In a recent ARC survey, 38 per-cent of respondents did not understand what it was, or why they should care. For many industrial companies though, big data will manifest itself as data from the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). In classic big data style, IIoT data will arrive faster, from more data sources, and accumulate in greater volume than most industry observers have anticipated.

This will mean that the classic architecture used for business intelligence, operational intelligence, and analytics will no longer be enough. New analytics technologies will come to the fore and will need to be placed closer to the data source to be effective.

This report introduces new analytics technologies, related supporting technologies, and early successes stories with IIoT-based analytics.

What Is Big Data Anyway?
Many industrial organizations do not have a good understanding of what big data is. ARC's survey from the summer of 2014 (What's Driving Industrial Investment in BI and Analytics?) found that 38 percent of survey respondents did not understand what big data was, or why they should even care. In many ways, that's not too surprising. Doug Laney's original definition of big data from 20 years ago stresses three V's - volume, velocity, and variety. That overarching definition has stood the test of time and is still accurate. However, in the interim, many technology vendors added their own (often self-serving) V's to the mix.

In practical terms, the biggest obstacle to getting started with big data may be that people think of big data as a thing. It's not. In practice, big data is a journey - and many organizations are already on that journey, whether they realize it or not.
