ARC Report Abstract

Many industrial organizations today struggle with how to best support, sustain, and improve their automation and information systems over the lifetimes of these important assets. History indicates an evolution in expectations based on the changing technologies and skills required to build and maintain automation hardware and software applications.

Automation vendor support models have also changed over several decades. In the past, these have ranged from "give us a call if it breaks and we'll see what we can do for you," to turnkey, end-to-end lifecycle management programs. Interestingly, internal approaches to automation support by end user organizations have been just as diverse.

The question becomes, "How does an end user organization mature and evolve based on changing technology and business conditions?" Attempting to respond to these organizational challenges in a vacuum can lead to employee frustration, poor performance, and suboptimal return on in-vestment. To help owner-operators benchmark their organizational de-sign for automation and begin to develop industry-wide best practices, ARC Advisory Group has organized a dedicated session for end users at the upcoming 2015 Industry Forum in Orlando, Florida, Feb. 9-13, 2015.

This ARC Insight is intended to provide a possible starting point for discussions.
