Industry Trends

ARC’s European Industry Forum, part of the successful series of worldwide conferences in Europe, America and Asia, has been held in Sitges (Barcelona), Spain on May 15 - 17, 2023. The event offered exclusive presentations and workshops on strategies and case studies in line with this year’s topic “Managing Industry Evolution in Times of Global Disruption” to its 160 international participants from 20 countries.

Cool Robotics Innovation

Experts from the end user and supplier communities and our ARC Analysts were presenting, discussing, and analyzing trends and drivers of Cool Robotics Innovations. Panelists were Thomas Dasbach of VDMA, Martin Naumann of KEBA, Matthias Gronstedt of HHLA Sky and their customer: Uwe Köcher from the Digital Lab of the City of Hamburg.

VDMA, OPC UA for Robotics

Dr.-Ing. Thomas Dasbach is an expert for OPC UA at VDMA. In this role, he oversees the development of the OPC UA for machinery specification. Dr. Dasbach gave insights about the latest releases of the OPC UA robotic working group and an outlook of future developments. With its ability to provide secure and reliable data exchange between robots, sensors and other industrial equipment, OPC UA can help optimize production processes, while reducing downtime caused by system failures or errors, and in combination with TSN, it becomes real-time capable!

KEBA, drag&bot OS

Martin Naumann of KEBA presented the software, drag&bot OS, that was developed at the Fraunhofer Institute. Mr. Naumann demonstrated and explained that drag&bot OS allows robots to be programmed with little to no programming knowledge. The software's drag-and-drop interface allows for intuitive and efficient programming, but also offers advanced features for experienced users. With increasing automation and the rising demand for more efficient production, the shortage of skilled workers and other factors, drag&bot OS from KEBA can be an enabler for further efficient automation.

HHLA Sky, Drones Control Center

Matthias Gronstedt of HHLA Sky explained that the idea of using drones for inspection, control, surveillance, logistics and transportation is not new, but HHLA Sky has taken it to the next level by creating a centralized control center for the simultaneous operation of up to 100 drones. The certifications of the different types of drones, which the company also develops and offers, as well as the safety and security system behind it, is and innovation and as far as we know no other drone manufacturer offers this. The control center functionalities are constantly being developed further, to control and monitor the drones, but also other "robot types" in the near future.

Use Case: LSBG, City of Hamburg, Drones-as-s-service

Dr.-Ing. Uwe Köcher is a Technical Product Owner, Software-Architect and Computer Sciences Engineer in the Digital Lab of the Agency of Roads, Bridges and Waters of the City of Hamburg (LSBG). In 2022, he started with the mission to support the digitalization of the "Engineering Workplace of the Future". Dr. Köcher showcased how the LSBG is using HHLA Sky solutions (Drones-as-s-service, DaaS) to be more productive, efficient and how they were able to overcome long-time engineering challenges in-house. Today, LSBG is using DaaS for a wide range of use cases. like construction site inspection, inspection of roads, bridges and flood protection facilities as well as for ad hoc flights on e.g. traffic anomalies.  He pointed out, that the „Tool set of Drones as a Service is highly supporting efficiency and productivity inhouse by using tools like automatic data generation, automatic synchronization of data to create Digital Twins, automatic data valuation and AI supported control and suggestions to review data issues.

ARC’s European Industry Forum & Platform

We like to thank our sponsors, who supported the ARC EIF 2023, and all our speakers and presenters, who made the event interesting, exciting and memorable.`

To complement the Forum, ARC Europe offers its online platform https://arc-industry-forum-europe.arcweb.com/en/, accessible 365 days a year. Its goal is to maintain the flow of information, and to foster network opportunities. On the platform you will find information concerning relevant economic developments and information on automation markets, as well as our quarterly industry webinars.

Materials and presentations from the Forum will be made available on our platform https://arc-industry-forum-europe.arcweb.com/en/ after registration, depending on the package chosen. Forum attendees can download presentation slides, view video recordings and receive further materials on the platform.
