ODVA has introduced new process device profiles for temperature sensors as part of The EtherNet/IP Specification. These profiles are designed to help system integrators and end users streamline device commissioning and facilitate easier device replacement, further optimizing plant operations. By standardizing process variables and diagnostics, the new profiles help to enhance vendor interoperability and simplify controller data integration for EtherNet/IP-compatible field devices. Available profiles now include Coriolis flow, electromagnetic flow, vortex flow, standard pressure, scaled pressure, and newly added Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD) and thermocouple temperature devices. The standardized formatting of process variables, totals, and diagnostics is further enhanced with the inclusion of temperature profiles.
The addition of temperature process device profiles builds on the ecosystem of EtherNet/IP device interoperability for end users, providing more seamless integration. The temperature profile includes a single process measurement value object to deliver a temperature value and status, along with multiple diagnostic instances for detailed diagnostic data. These devices measure relative heat or cold using RTDs or thermocouples. Thermocouples function by generating a voltage difference between two joined metals proportional to the temperature difference, offering a wide sensing range. RTDs, in contrast, rely on the principle that a metal’s electrical resistance increases with temperature, offering higher accuracy.
All EtherNet/IP process device profiles are aligned with the Process Automation Device Information Model (PA-DIM) and NAMUR NE 107 diagnostics. This can enable easier movement of data from the factory floor to the cloud for analysis and action and quicker identification of maintenance issues through standardization.
Key Benefits of EtherNet/IP Process Device Profiles
Improved Vendor Interoperability: Provides standardized access to process variables and diagnostics, such as NAMUR NE 107 status signals.
Enhanced Integration: Supports more seamless interaction with PA-DIM, helping to enable easier data movement to higher-level systems, such as PLCs, DCS, and cloud platforms.
Broadened Ecosystem: With the addition of temperature devices, the profiles expand the range of devices available for more simplified commissioning and asset monitoring.
ODVA continues to evolve EtherNet/IP to meet the requirements of the process industries, incorporating Ethernet-APL, PA-DIM, NAMUR standards, FDI, and process device profiles.
