The collaboration combines Hitachi’s infrastructure expertise with OpenAI’s AI technologies to help accelerate sustainable data center development worldwide.
Hitachi and OpenAI have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a strategic partnership focused on building next-generation AI infrastructure and expanding global data centers. This agreement brings together the complementary strengths of both organizations to help advance sustainable data center operations and accelerate the deployment of AI technologies that address global and societal challenges.
Under this MoU, the companies will collaborate across several key areas designed to help strengthen both the physical and digital layers of AI infrastructure:
Outside Data Centers: The partnership will focus on helping to minimize the load on power transmission and distribution networks to help progress towards future zero-emission data centers, securing the supply of critical and long-lead-time equipment, and standardizing prefabricated and modular designs to help shorten construction timelines.
Within Data Centers: Hitachi and OpenAI will explore cooperation on the design and supply of essential infrastructure, such as cooling systems and storage, to help support faster, more reliable AI data center deployment.
AI Technology Integration: Hitachi will expand the use of OpenAI’s large language models within its Lumada solutions, including HMAX, to help enhance the value and intelligence of its digital offerings.
Hitachi’s global offerings in power grids, clean energy, cooling technologies, data management, and operational services helps to position the company to support the next wave of AI infrastructure. In the U.S., it has announced investments exceeding $1 billion USD to help to meet the rapidly growing demand for transformers and high-voltage equipment driven by AI data center growth.
As part of this initiative, Hitachi is also accelerating the global rollout of its HMAX solutions, which combine AI and deep domain expertise across its installed base of products and systems to help address both customer and societal challenges. The announcement demonstrates Hitachi’s ongoing commitment to co-developing sustainable innovation with strategic partners, such as OpenAI, helping to reinforce its role in advancing a more intelligent, efficient, and resilient global AI ecosystem.
