Nokia Extends MX Industrial Edge Capabilities and Partner Ecosystem to Accelerate Industry 4.0 Transformation
Nokia announced new platform capabilities and applications for its on-premise Mission Critical Industrial Edge (MXIE) compute solution. These enhancements will enable Nokia MXIE to host applications from different ecosystems, including legacy non-cloud native workloads, elevate operational technology (OT) network security, and facilitate application development to advance enterprise digital transformation.
With MXIE, Nokia introduced an ecosystem-neutral approach allowing enterprises to swiftly deploy edge innovations from public cloud, industrial partner cloud and Industrial Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) onto MXIE to complete their digital transformation. As the growing ecosystem drives greater enterprise innovation, Nokia is enhancing MXIE with new capabilities and partner applications to accelerate this momentum.
The new Nokia MXIE capability will enable non-cloud native workloads and applications to run in a safe and controlled environment alongside containerized applications. With this, Nokia MXIE can host a huge variety of applications from different ecosystems, including legacy applications most often found in brownfield industrial campuses.
Nokia MXIE developer portal (MXIE depo) will facilitate application development, providing an enhanced developer experience and tools to enable faster and smoother application onboarding. Nokia is expanding the capabilities of the platform by working with two new applications partners:
Siemens MindConnect Software Agent on MXIE helps deliver seamless connectivity between industrial assets and systems. With support for multiple industrial data protocols and formats, Siemens MindConnect Software Agent simplifies the secure transfer of operational data to MindSphere, the Siemens industrial IoT as a service solution, which is leveraged to provide Industrial IoT capabilities and applications.
Zscaler Private Access brings Zero Trust Security to MXIE to secure mission-critical Edge workloads, OT, and IIoT systems. Unlike VPN solutions, Zscaler Private Access minimizes the attack surface and risk of lateral threat movement by connecting users, sensors and devices only to the applications they need to do their work.
New Nokia Industrial 5G Field Router to Extend Private Wireless Capabilities and Simplify Connectivity in North America
Nokia is extending its Industrial portfolio of user equipment to facilitate private wireless network connectivity in North America. The new Nokia 5G Industrial field router and dongle, radio access spectrum capabilities and Nokia Connectivity Operations Dashboard will provide more options for the deployment and management of secure, reliable private 4G/LTE and 5G wireless for enterprises, educational establishments, cities and other entities.
The Nokia Industrial 5G fieldrouter and 5G dongle can be deployed in Citizen Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) 3.5 GHz spectrum in the US and Canada. The 4G fieldrouter and dongle can be used for Anterix 900 MHz licensed spectrum nationwide across the US to connect machines, autonomous vehicles, and robots. Nokia radio access points are also ready for CBRS 5G standalone (SA) deployments. Leveraging the Nokia integrated CBRS solution, which also includes Spectrum Access System (SAS) and Domain Proxy capabilities launched in early 2021, enterprises now have the option to easily deploy private 4.9G/LTE or 5G on shared and licensed spectrum.
Enterprises can use private wireless to connect equipment, and, by deploying 5G standalone private wireless over CBRS with on-premises industrial edge capabilities, will be able to benefit from business-critical Industry 4.0 use cases. These can include autonomous operations, digital twinning, and predictive maintenance.
The release of CBRS spectrum by the FCC for enterprise and public entity use has led to the acceleration in private wireless deployments. Nokia is now working with over 90 private wireless customers in the country, of which over 70 are using CBRS shared spectrum.
Nokia understands that access to spectrum is only part of the story and is therefore also launching the Nokia Connectivity Operations Dashboard to ensure contextual network visibility. Nokia customers will have all the tools they require to track the network usage of connected PCs, phones etc. as the Nokia Industrial user equipment on site feeds data for insights. Nokia Connectivity Operations Dashboard extends Nokia Industrial device management and the information gained from it can be used to build the reports required by government and other stakeholders.
Nokia Industrial device management supports zero-touch onboarding of Nokia Industrial smartphones, work pads, and IoT devices on the network. Management can be scaled to thousands of devices, allowing customers to apply policies and permissions by groups and update and patch devices remotely. Further, by subscribing to Nokia Network Digital Twin in addition to the Nokia Connectivity Dashboard, customers will benefit from real-time monitoring of the network as experienced by the devices. This will provide capabilities such as anomaly detection and prediction of future behavior, allowing users to see the impact of planned changes ahead of real-world implementation.
