I recently attended the OSISoft Users Conference - Transform Your World with Data in San Francisco (April 4-7, 2016). After hearing from many industry experts, my key takeaway from the event was - OSIsoft will not accomplish this transformation by working alone. The operational transformation described and potential value to industries served by OSIsoft require an ecosystem of partners who will build the software on top of PI infrastructure. Only then, will application software empower the people with greater operational insight.
Martin Otterson, OSIsoft SVP of Sales, Marketing, and Industry delivered the keynote address to an audience of 2500 engineers, customers, OSIsoft staff and the large contingent of partners. Martin emphasized the need for more industry-specific applications that change the way people use data. This "community" of software companies and developers is consistent with other giants in the IoT industry such as SAP, GE Digital, and others.
OSIsoft is a 35-year-old family business with strong roots in helping customers connect a multitude of DCS's, PLC's and subsystems - now turning to focus on partners and to make it easy for partners to work with the company and integrate applications.
Many have totally underestimated the complexity of managing and dealing with process data. Martin alluded to the enemy of the process engineer as the excel spreadsheet. While Excel sheets have been useful, the proliferation of this has not been helpful to help companies digitally transform. Martin compares excel sheets to bunnies, and bunnies are particularly good at multiplying out of control.
While enterprises have already begun to transform Business Processes at the transactional level, work practices of industrial technology have lagged behind. With the advent of the Industrial Internet of things and the pending connectivity of 50 billion assets by 2020, OSIsoft made a point of addressing the need to create more value from the infrastructure that is already in place. Martin further describes "Real-time decisions" are now "application ready" and, as Analytics solutions continue to become front and center, this will require PI infrastructure as a real-time data source. The company believes that due to the prior investments in PI System, they are well positioned to take advantage of IIoT
OSIsoft has journeyed from a simple Process Historian to what they see as an infrastructure and ecosystem for the 300 partners around the globe. At the event, the partners were very well represented. Many conversations among the attendees and also discussed during the industry tracks was the common theme of partnerships and the need to get more value from the data. Several customers spoke about the fact that much of their process data within the PI servers was essentially untapped by business and operational stakeholders. Customers also welcomed new process analytics solutions that would build on top of PI.
