Phoenix Contact has launched Virtual PLCnext Control, a software-based controller solution that enables flexible automation functions in virtualized IT environments. Virtual PLCnext Control is hardware-independent and is based on the Open Container Initiative (OCI). This architecture enables the controller software to run as a container application in IT infrastructures such as Docker and Hyper-V on Windows and Linux systems, both locally and in the cloud, abstracting control tasks from physical devices and executing them on high-performance computers.

As a software code package running in an OCI container, Virtual PLCnext Control enables seamless integration, combines OT and IT security, and optimizes costs by consolidating multiple PLC instances. Benefits include increased flexibility, scalability, and cost efficiency when integrating into existing automation and IT landscapes.

The solution is fully integrated into the Phoenix Contact PLCnext Technology ecosystem and is targeted at applications in industrial digitalization where classic control technology has reached its limits, including simulations, test environments, decentralized control concepts, or as part of an edge architecture.
