PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI), the umbrella organization representing the PROFINET, PROFIBUS, IO-Link, and omlox industrial automation network technologies, released the results of the annual survey of newly installed nodes. The survey results showed moderate growth as well as recognition of the impact of current economic uncertainties and supply issues on customer inventories, particularly in Europe and China.

PROFINET

Devices supporting the industrial ethernet PROFINET protocol were reported to have increased by 9.5 million nodes in 2024, with the total installed base estimate rising to 78.8 million nodes. Shipments in 2024 were roughly 10 percent lower than the 2023 figure of 10.6 million nodes, when the installed base of PROFINET devices surpassed those of serial PROFIBUS devices for the first time.

PROFIBUS

PI reports that, in 2024, a total of 1.1 million PROFIBUS devices were sold, approximately 27 percent less than the 2023 figure of 1.5 million. Of the devices shipped in 2024, 800,000 went to the process industry. The year-end installed base was estimated to rise to 70 million devices, with 17.3 million installed at processing plants.

PROFIsafe

PI’s data shows that shipments of devices supporting the functional safety protocol PROFIsafe totaled 3.1 million nodes in 2024, close to 21 percent less than the 3.9 million nodes shipped in 2023. The year-end 2024 installed base of PROFIsafe devices is now estimated at 28.7 million.

IO-Link

An additional 9.7 million new IO-Link nodes were added in 2024, with a year-end installed base total of more than 61 million nodes. The 2024 figure is almost 40 percent less than the record growth year in 2023, when an additional 15.9 million devices were installed. PI attributes the lower 2024 figure to an anticipated normalization after the surge in 2023 shipments after the post-pandemic material shortages and delivery bottlenecks of 2022.
