Protecting Data in the IIoT Age

The most precious asset of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) efforts is the data and analytics that will be unleashed by the “things.” However, current analytics products are only the tip of the iceberg. As time moves forward, next-generation analytics and artificial intelligence technologies will provide real-time decision-making at the point of production. The sooner practitioners realize that these data must be considered mission critical and thus completely protected, the better. Delivering this protection at the edge also requires different approaches than the traditional data center or a cloud.

In a session at the 2017 ARC Japan Forum, July 11 in Tokyo, Jason Andersen, Vice President of Business Line Management, Stratus Technologies addressed the 250-plus attendees from the local industrial automation community. In his presentation, Mr. Andersen discussed the evolution of IIoT and data criticality, techniques for protecting data, and a unified edge infrastructure as a future platform of the next generation edge processing. This report summarizes his presentation.

Defining the Edge
“For the first time, the industrial automation market became the number one segment for Stratus last year, finally eclipsing the banking segment,” said Mr. Andersen. Because mission-critical computing is now happening at the edge, it has become the most important part of the company’s machine-critical business.
