PTC and Bosch Software Innovations have announced a technology alliance to facilitate the integration of PTC's ThingWorx Platform with the Bosch IoT Suite. What I find particularly interesting about this recent technology alliance is that brings together a PLM provider, PTC, with an industrial automation, factory networking, and equipment provider, Bosch. Clearly, the PLM solution and technology providers are leading the charge in providing technology, platforms, and solutions for smart connected product development and for connecting the next generation of factories and production lines.
This alliance between PTC and Bosch appears to be in the same category as Siemens PLM and its parent business unit, Siemens Digital Factory. Siemens direction and strategy is the extended Digital Enterprise, where automated work stations and intelligent assembly lines are connected into a factory system of systems. This involves both IIoT and smart manufacturing, and will also address the basic principles of Industrie 4.0, where there is communication between intelligent products, machines, and production systems. Bosch, a German company, also follows the principles of Industrie 4.0, and the Bosch IoT suite provides M2M connection technologies to help users implement a smart, connected factory ecosystem. PTC's ThingWorx platform will help users design this factory ecosystem and define the components and roles. It will be interesting to see how well the Bosch IoT Suite and ThingWorx play together out of the box, irrespective of integration issues. The Bosch IoT Suite M2M Connector for ThingWorx provide technical interplay between the two platforms, so this appears to address the interoperability issues.
The new Bosch IoT Suite M2M Connector for ThingWorx is now available on the ThingWorx Marketplace. The technology stack enables IIoT developers to connect and control heterogeneous devices and systems and develop IoT applications for connected factory environments. Additionally, IIoT developers will be able to addapt IoT solutions to the specific needs of individual companies and industry sectors.
PTC and Bosch Software Innovations successfully tested the integrated technology stack in the Industrial Internet Consortium
Track & Trace Testbed by wirelessly connecting tools to operate together on the factory floor. The Track & Trace application permits the monitoring of the status of all devices on the fly. The data collected is used to optimize production processes and tool maintenance. Irregularities or possible failures are detected immediately and the faulty device can be replaced before downtime can occur.
The Track & Trace Testbed addresses complex discrete manufacturing production landscapes such as those in the automotive, aerospace and mechanical and plant engineering sectors, which are made up of heterogeneous machines, devices and process landscapes that must be orchestrated to work together. When combined, the ThingWorx and Bosch Software Innovations technology provides IIoT developers with a tool that can be used for connecting heterogeneous equipment and enterprise processes.
