The new controller integrates safety, performance, and cybersecurity to simplify operations and improve scalability.

Rockwell Automation launched its newest controller, the ControlLogix 5590, a central component of its Logix platform. Designed to help meet the evolving demands of modern manufacturing, the all-in-one controller offers more seamless software integration and multidiscipline control across enterprise environments to help enhance efficiency and simplify system design.

Manufacturers continue to face increasing complexity due to competitive pressures, workforce shortages, and heightened safety and security requirements. Legacy systems built on proprietary technologies can limit flexibility and increase operational costs. The ControlLogix 5590 controller helps to address these challenges through integrated safety, higher performance, and built-in cybersecurity to help manufacturers operate more efficiently and securely.

Key Capabilities of the ControlLogix 5590 Controller

  • Integrated Safety: More advanced, integrated functional safety capabilities help to eliminate the need for separate safety models. Certified to meet global safety standards, these features help to enable safer system designs with reduced complexity.

  • High-Performance Processing: Equipped with higher-speed processing and expanded memory capacity, the controller is designed to support more demanding process, batch, discrete, motion, and robotics applications on a scalable and interoperable platform.

  • Built-In Cybersecurity: Designed in alignment with global standards, such as IEC 62443, the controller includes embedded security features that help to protect operations from cyber threats while maintaining compliance.

  • Unified Engineering Software Suite: Integration with Studio 5000 Logix Designer and FactoryTalk Design Studio helps to streamline development, accelerate deployment, and simplify engineering workflows across the enterprise.

According to Craig Resnick, Vice President, at ARC Advisory Group. "Manufacturers today require control platforms that can address performance safety and security requirements without adding complexity to their operations. Solutions that converge high speed processing, integrated safety and robust cybersecurity in a single architecture help organizations modernize more efficiently while maintaining operational continuity and increasing operational resilience."

The ControlLogix 5590 represents Rockwell Automation’s latest advancement in helping to enable manufacturers to design more secure, scalable, and efficient control systems that better align with the future of industrial automation.
