Rockwell Automation announced the release of its new FactoryTalk Analytics LogixAI module.  Formerly known as Project Sherlock, the new LogixAI module uses artificial intelligence (AI) to help detect production anomalies and alert workers to investigate or intervene with these issues as necessary. LogixAI is an add-on module for ControlLogix controllers. It fits directly into a control chassis and streams controller data over the backplane to help build predictive models.  It can also help to continuously monitor a production operation, detecting anomalies against its derived understanding.

The new LogixAI module is designed to be used by production workers, which helps companies to reduce the burden of requiring production workers to have the skillset of a data scientist, as many previous analytics technologies required workers to have a deep expertise in both data science and industrial processes.  For example, the module can help operators spot performance deviations in equipment, such as mixers, that could negatively affect product quality or lead to downtime.

The new LogixAI module can also be used as a virtual sensor where, for example, as production workers are taking a reading, such as the humidity of a packaged food product, the module can analyze variables from line assets, such as sprayers, dryers and burners, to virtually predict a measurement.  Then workers can then be notified of these problems by configuring alarms on a human machine interface (HMI) or dashboard.

Future features of the new LogixAI module will help to provide production workers with additional information that will further focus production problem-solving and automating the optimization of processes.
