Much has been written and blogged about by ARC analysts (and guest bloggers) over the last few years regarding the tremendous operational and business value that automation and enhanced communications such as wireless can bring about for companies across all industries, but especially in asset-intensive industries such as oil & gas – upstream, midstream and downstream.  One important component vital for intelligent systems to be most effective is accurate and reliable sensor measurements.  These provide the data that can be transformed into actionable information through analytics and the enhanced communications that typically comprise smart field systems.

ARC believes that sensors, particularly smart sensors, are the proverbial “tip of the spear” that enables data to be transformed into effective actions through the power of solutions that leverage advanced computing, analytics, enhanced communications – including wireless, and automated workflows, processes and procedures.  ISA108, a standard covering intelligent device management, is playing a critical role in helping operators and end users to avoid dealing with stranded data and begin more fully exploit ability to transform sensor data into actionable information.

At the upcoming ARC Industry Forum in Orlando, speakers from both Petronas and Phillips 66 will share their perspectives and success stories on how they are leveraging sensors to develop smart field systems that help improve their operations.  These include advanced tank farm oil movement automation systems. We are going to delve into how these companies leverage sensor technologies to create intelligent systems that enhance their operational performance and help ensure safer operations; as many in the oil & gas industry know, safety is the #1 priority.  In addition, the discussion will touch on wide-ranging topics such as multiphase flow metering, sensors used in leak detection systems, a brief primer on IIoT, and more.

We hope to see you at the Forum down in Orlando from February 6th through 9th, especially if you are interested in learning a great deal about the business value made possible by smart sensors, wireless, IIoT, digital platforms, operational analytics and machine learning, Cloud-computing, IIoT-enabled asset performance management (APM), future of drones, augmented reality, Smart Grid, cybersecurity, and much, much more.
