Project Success Story

Schneider Electric, a global specialist in energy management and automation, announced that it has signed a global agreement with Showa Shell Sekiyu to implement SimSci Spiral Suite, the company’s Unified Supply Chain Management solution. Scope of the deployment includes providing a unified environment for asset management, planning, scheduling, network supply chain and distribution optimization, and High Performance Computing (HPC) modules.

Oil and Gas companies face challenges to improve operational agility and gain access to “siloed” information trapped in stand-alone, legacy applications. Many firms are now digitalizing their operations to leverage the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), helping to unlock this data and convert it into business intelligence. Resulting IIoT benefits are improved operational visibility, decision support and efficiency across the enterprise.

Spiral Suite brings together planning, which generates operationally realistic plans, and scheduling, which generates event-based scheduling with automated data management within a planning environment, into a single application. All activities are supported within a single user interface using a single source of data with version and data management control. The Spiral Suite interface is designed to be intuitive for both beginners and experts, enabling information to be shared between users. Planners can see future scheduling constraints and schedulers can assess decisions against commercial impact and operational feasibility.

Showa Shell Sekiyu identified a need to update its legacy tools with a more modern enterprise supply chain platform. The company is now implementing Schneider Electric’s SimSci Spiral Suite solution, which offers a cloud-based working environment and a common data model across the company’s planning and scheduling operations.

Schneider Electric provided Showa Shell Sekiyu with improved model stability and more simplified model building, training and maintenance. As part of it's digitization strategy, Spiral Suite helped Showa Shell Sekiyu to better visualize processes, manage models and analyze results. Spiral provided Showa Shell Sekiyu with faster and easier topology building without extensive learning, an overall refinery balance that verified their models reflected reality, network modeling, report preparation and model validation. Spiral promoted collaboration through the refinery, with crude traders, supply traders, and the refinery operations planners using the same global LP model.

Schneider Electric offers industrial planning and scheduling applications designed to be integrated solutions. It supports supply chain work processes across various enterprises, bringing together trading, asset management, planning, scheduling, optimization and distribution. Results helped Showa Shell Sekiyu to explore opportunities, reduce risk and shrink the gap between planned and actual results.

Spiral Suite is designed to help enable a digital transformation in the oil and gas industry by digitalizing the full downstream value chain through a unified supply chain management platform. With Spiral Suite, Showa Shell Sekiyu has implemented a solution that helps to enable enterprise collaboration across various operating sites and trading offices. Showa Shell users can gain new insights from business intelligence that was previously not readily available, helping to improve business performance and agile decision support.
