Siemens has a long history serving the process industries dating back to the early 1980s and is the market leader in many areas of automation. Recently, as the IT/OT convergence reaches the process industries, the company took time to present its strategy to ARC analysts.

Siemens pointed out the challenges faced by the process industry faces today. These include the need to identify and source alternative feedstocks while improving the efficient use of energy and other resources. Another aspect are changing customer requirements and needs, for which traditional process plants offer little flexibility, further aggravated by legacy automation systems that run them, hampering the integration of advanced technologies. At the same time, the process industry faces labor shortages, making it difficult to find skilled staff. Finally, cybersecurity threats and regulatory requirements require even more technology to keep up with a constantly developing and changing world.
In his keynote address, Siemens Process Automation CEO Axel Lorenz pointed to smart manufacturing solutions as their strategy to address these challenges. The supplier focuses on the following key technologies (see table), to shape the future of process automation.

Siemens aligns its vision for process automation with market needs. Their emphasis is on addressing problems over focusing on the technology used to solve these problem, as end users need to solve problems in the most efficient, least complex manner possible. From SDA to AI implemented at all levels of process automation, Siemens is committed to implement key technologies to address the critical challenges process industry users face today and in the future.
