Company and Product News

Cisco’s Industrial IoT business—including industrial network switches, routers, wireless access points (WAPs), and OT cybersecurity—has recently enjoyed an elevated profile within the company, as its growth outpaces that of most of the enterprise and other portfolios of the over $50 billion firm. This elevated profile is further evident as new Industrial IoT developments are in the spotlight at the company’s annual Cisco Live customer event.

Industrial IoT announcement highlights from the event include a significant expansion of the industrial switching portfolio, integration of Cisco Ultra-Reliable Wireless Backhaul (URWB—formerly FluidMesh) and Wi-Fi 7, and an AI-based clustering enhancement to Cisco Cyber Vision.

Industrial Ethernet Switches

The company announced the addition of 19 new rugged switches, scheduled for availability in July 2025. These switches feature environmental ratings ranging from IP30 to IP67 and offer support for PoE and UPoE. The new models also support 4-pair Power over Ethernet (4PPoE), faster uplinks to meet the bandwidth demands of industrial AI applications, and a seamless integration of Layer 2 and Layer 3 transport into a single network using fabric technologies.

Cisco URWB Integrated with Wi-Fi Technology

The company announced the integration of Cisco Ultra-Reliable Wireless Backhaul (URWB) and Wi-Fi technology—previously available only in client devices—into Wi-Fi 7, 6E, and 6 access points. Both technologies can now operate simultaneously through a single hardware platform and common management tools, such as Catalyst Center.

The URWB standalone solution, originally acquired through the 2020 Fluidmesh acquisition, remains focused on providing high-performance wireless links for critical systems. URWB utilizes advanced technologies such as redundant data paths and automatic failover to ensure that critical applications remain connected, offering a secure, dedicated wireless link with predictable low latency that is isolated from the public Wi-Fi network.

AI-Powered OT Security

AI use cases in industrial environments require seamless communication across OT, IT, and cloud domains. Robust cybersecurity measures are essential—not only to swiftly detect malicious activity but also to effectively prevent intrusions. Cisco’s Cyber Vision is designed to provide visibility into the industrial environment, identifying thousands of assets and understanding their roles. The company is now leveraging AI clustering technology to simplify this process with new AI-powered security features, including asset clustering and identity threat detection for OT remote access.

Segmentation is critical to prevent unwanted communications and stop the spread of malware, but assets must first be grouped to enable segmentation policies. Cyber Vision now includes AI-based asset clustering that automatically groups assets into zones, allowing organizations to reduce network segmentation time.

In addition, Cisco Secure Equipment Access (SEA) can now detect identity threats, such as remote access from unexpected locations or during unusual working hours. Added support for Cisco AI Assistant eliminates the need to manually sort through thousands of audit trails for forensics by enabling users to get answers in seconds.
