The Edge AI Foundation, formerly known as the tinyML Foundation, is a global non-profit organization made up of industry professionals, academia, and policymakers focused on promoting lightweight and energy-efficient AI technologies including tinyML, edge AI, and on-device AI. The foundation announced an expanded charter and brand identity at Taipei 2024 which includes a new name, brand, website, initiatives, and partners to better embrace the rapid innovation occurring in the AI and technology sectors.

First founded in 2018, the Edge AI Foundation began as a community focused on bringing AI workloads from the cloud to the edge of the architecture in sustainable and democratized ways. Major partners now include Qualcomm Technologies Inc., embedUR Systems Inc., Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation, Wind River, and others.

In addition to the brand and name change, the organization is also introducing two new initiatives to support its community: Edge AI Labs, and Edge AIP.

Edge AI Labs is a new platform powered by embedUR Systems Inc. that offers freely available and curated datasets, models, and code to accelerate edge AI research, development, and deployment. This new effort intends to embrace edge AI technologies from tinyML to generative AI. The organization expects generative AI to take sensor-based edge platforms to the next level and intends to bring together academia, industry, and technology to make that vision a reality.

The EDGE AIP consists of leading educators from around the world developing a bridge between academic institutions and industry partners, including new education initiatives for knowledge certification, management of the Edge Foundation’s new scholarship fund to support the development of edge AI teaching skills, and internship, mentoring programs, and awards to cultivate the next generation of AI experts and leadership.
