Sample

  • We reached out to companies with our internal data, LinkedIn, emails, and our digital transformation council: https://www.arcweb.com/digital-transformation-counci .
  • The sample is representative for the AI market in terms of company size as well as regional distribution.
  • Overall, more than 170 people responded.
  • We consider the results to be significant and reliable.
  • The survey splits out into three different branches:
    • Suppliers
    • Users
    • Machine builders (OEMs), EPC, and System integrators (SI)
  • It is necessary to split these out, as each group has different challenges, insights, and motivation, when it comes to suppliers and end users of artificial intelligence.
  • We consider the samples for users and suppliers to be representative and therefore reliable.
  • The group of OEMs, EPCs, and SI is comparably small, hence only answers, which are homogenous. In the following analysis, we only include solid results.

Current Adoption, Outlook, and COVID Impact

The Charts show the direct survey results in light blue and the estimated state of the market in dark blue.

The estimated state of the market is based on the results from the question presented on the following slide and the perceived position of the respondents.

It is normal for a survey to not reach the people not interested in a topic, as they typically do not participate in surveys.

Artificial Intelligence in Machinery

Suppliers, OEMs, EPCs:

  • There is a gap between early adopters and late movers.
  • Overall, half of the companies currently offer AI based solutions.
  • We expect that almost all companies will offer AI based solutions by 2025.

Users:

  • Most of the users are in piloting phase.
  • While there are selected offerings for ERP/MES software, which use AI, on the machinery level, there are hardly companies, which have solutions in place that are adopted enterprise wide.
  • While we left the “hype phase” in AI, the real impact of AI in the plant floor will be seen over the next years.
  • Overall, the sample is slightly biased towards the early adopters of AI.
  • The results of this question let a re-evaluation of the adoption seen in the previous slide.
  • We did not do this re-evaluation for all questions, but it must be considered that answers are given by a progressive set of companies.
