Overview
Several ARC analysts attended the Octave event in Austin the week of June 19th at the Fairmont Hotel. For those that don’t know, Octave is a new company, a spinoff of Swedish-based company Hexagon. Octave Intelligence plc is a pure-play software company comprising nearly all of the software assets formerly under the Hexagon umbrella: engineering information management, asset lifecycle intelligence, alarm management, cybersecurity, safety, infrastructure, and geospatial-related software solutions. Hexagon, meanwhile, remains focused on its hardware businesses, including humanoid robots, sensors, metrology, and more.
Octave is positioning itself as a differentiated industrial software company by combining engineering, operations, safety, cybersecurity, and physical security capabilities around an AI-ready industrial data fabric and continuous digital thread. Its strategy emphasizes open, contextualized data, SaaS delivery, and human-guided industrial AI to help asset-intensive organizations improve lifecycle efficiency, resilience, and operational decision-making.
The scope of Octave is somewhat unique among industrial software providers: operations, the asset lifecycle, and safety and protection solutions. The new company is designed around the primary domains of design, build, operate, and protect. Octave bridges the gap between engineering, design, and construction software for industrial facilities and also includes solutions for safety and protection-related applications, such as alarm management in the process industries.
Bridging the Gap Between Engineering and Operations
The ability to bridge this gap between engineering, construction, and operations is essential now; it’s one of the last big silos that must be broken down in industrial enterprises. There are huge economic, efficiency, and even safety benefits that arise from this digital thread approach. ARC’s own end-user clients have made it very clear that they want to break down the silos between engineering and operations, and the silos separating the supply chain from operations are next. Octave has a plan to bridge these gaps with a digital threat strategy that leverages common, contextualized, and AI-ready data, providing a single source of truth from design through the entire lifecycle of industrial facilities.
The event in Austin was the first in a worldwide series that will introduce customers to the new business and its long-term strategic plan. This was laid out in the keynote address by Octave’s new CEO, Mattias Stenberg. Before leading Octave, Mattias had senior leadership positions in Hexagon, including president of the Asset Lifecycle Intelligence division. Now that Mattias is running the show, it is clear that there is a very well-thought-out strategy to capitalize on the value of an open, AI-ready industrial data fabric and a continuous digital thread that can help end users reduce costs and improve efficiency throughout the plant lifecycle.
