Sustainability, whether it’s in the form of emissions reduction, regulatory reporting, energy efficiency, or renewable power, remains the leading business issue facing industrial manufacturing companies today. ARC’s 2025 Industry Leadership Forum in Orlando brought the perspective of leading end user companies on the issue of sustainability, with a Wednesday keynote session moderated by ARC Vice President Mike Guilfoyle and featuring:

The panel discussed how sustainability has become a universal core business metric, one that requires unprecedented levels of data from every aspect of the enterprise. Sustainability itself is not an isolated goal, but one that has become inexorably entwined with broader business strategies, from innovation to product lifecycle management. Sustainability has also become a major driver for investment in new technologies like Industrial AI.
Mike Guilfoyle of ARC: Sustainability as Core Business Metric
Mike Guilfoyle, vice president and sustainability practice leader at ARC, kicked off the discussion by sharing ARC’s view on sustainability, illustrated by some of the results from our most recent annual technology survey of industrial end users. Mike pointed out that while our survey didn’t list sustainability as the number one business initiative, it does rank third according to our survey respondents behind business growth and innovation.
Mike was quick to point out, however, that sustainability has become intertwined into most business initiatives today in some way, including growth and innovation. According to Mike, “The concept of sustainability is getting broken down into specific tasks. It's getting embedded across the business where it can be considered as part of other performance metrics in the decision-making process.”
Sustainability is also a leading driver in the adoption of new technologies. Sustainability reporting requires new levels of data integration and contextualization, driving the adoption of industrial data fabrics and industrial data platforms, as well as Industrial AI. According to the ARC Annual Technology Survey, for example, sustainability analysis is one of the leading applications being developed for Industrial AI product development and design initiatives.
