Supply Chain Planning

Publish Date

This Supply Chain Planning (SCP) market research study delivers current market analysis plus a five year market and technology forecast. The study is available in multiple editions including worldwide and all regions.

The Supply Chain Planning Market Is in the Midst of a Transition to SaaS

Supply chain planning (SCP) solutions use complex algorithms, optimization techniques, and heuristics to solve supply chain problems that occur in the planning horizon (one week to one month for operational planning, one month to several months for tactical planning, and one year to multiple years for strategic planning). While there are a variety of payback categories from the use of supply chain planning solutions, the ability to reduce inventories and effectively balance demand and supply are the central value propositions.

Supply Chain Planning Application StackThe global supply chain planning market is in the midst of moving over from a software license model to Software as a Service (SaaS) pricing.  With SaaS, instead of paying a large upfront payment, payments are spread out over several years greatly lowering the upfront costs.

In the long term, SaaS tends to increase supplier’s revenues and make those revenues more predictable.  In the short term, however, software vendors take a hit not just from the loss of license revenue, but from gradually decreasing maintenance revenues.

When SaaS is accompanied by Cloud solutions – the two usually go together – implementation revenues fall as well as Cloud solutions tend to either not allow for customization or discourage it.  ARC did a bottom up forecast to forecast revenues in this market for the next five years.

Supply Chain Planning Strategic Issues

While SaaS is the biggest issue affecting the market, there are several important strategic issues.

  • Integrated business planning is the central supply chain process.  What solutions are important here?
  • How has the architecture for SCP solutions changed?  What are the implications of those changes?
  • Supply chain planning solutions have always used advanced statistics and math?  What is changing here?
