Owens Corning Application of Digital Twins for Improving Operations and Maintenance

Overview

Digital twins were a core topic at the recent ARC Industry Forum, held virtually for the first time this year.  Our session on “Digital Twins for Improving Operations and Maintenance” explained digital twins and their applications. A digital twin is a digital replica of a physical device. During plant design and build, digital twins provide a means to simulate and improve front end engineering and design (FEED), design, construction sequencing, and commissioning. For operations, digital twins use real time data to assess status for predictive maintenance, process optimization, and operator training. Also, a 3D digital twin of a plant can be used to navigate to a virtual representation of an asset to access information about the real asset.

Types of Digital Twins and Relation to Digital Thread

The session began with an introduction to digital twins and segmentation into the types of digital twins. It also introduced digital thread in relation to digital twins.

  • A digital twin provides a virtual representation of a physical device
  • A digital thread supports the business process and workflow for the digital twin

ARC Vice President of Enterprise Software Ralph Rio’s introduction to digital twins and the digital thread (7:25 minutes) is available at ARC’s YouTube Channel.

Predictive Maintenance at Owens Corning

Emily Grams, Process Analytics Engineer, Owens Corning works with manufacturing plant engineers and operations to implement analytics solutions that aid in process optimization and upset prediction. Most notably, she led deployments of a digital twin analytics software within two of Owen’s Corning residential roofing lines driving productivity through data solutions.

During ARC Industry’s Virtual Forum session exploring digital twins in plants, Emily’s presentation provides the Owens Corning case story. She presented the development, application, and benefits of a performance digital twin for predictive maintenance using the Braincube software. Braincube is an Industrial IoT platform suite with business and expert apps designed for manufacturing.

Emily’s presentation is available on YouTube (8:31 minutes).
