The Linux Foundation announced the intent to form the Open Metaverse Foundation (OMF) 
and is soliciting initial founding members to join the effort. OMF founders see immense potential for the open Metaverse, with the possibility of it being as impactful as the World Wide Web.
Viewed as an ever-changing yet persistent, immersive experience that exists both between and inside of the digital and real worlds, OMF founders believe that, to truly flourish in the same way as the Internet, it will need to be an open Metaverse for all.
OMF Foundational Interest Groups and their coverage areas include:
- Users: user focused objects and their connections to other systems
- Transactions: Transfer of ownership and receipts needed to audit and verify objects
- Digital Assets: Standardization of media & metadata for common usage of objects
- Virtual Worlds and Simulations: Data models to enable cross-experience interoperability
- Artificial Intelligence: AI usage in direct and indirect human or experience interaction
- Networking: Protocols and distributed computing for network interoperability
- Security and Privacy: Auditing and maintenance of security, privacy, DEI and safety
- Legal and Policy: Core terminology, standards approach and legal considerations
