Today's automation technologies and methodologies can boost an industrial organization's operational efficiencies, but only if properly under-stood, implemented, and utilized. At the 19th Annual ARC Industry Forum in Orlando, Florida this month, Cliff Pederson of Pederson Enterprises, Inc. and Yahya Nazer of The Dow Chemical Company, presented several approaches for efficient and effective automation implementation.
Mr. Pederson shared how the work under way by MIMOSA and other industry associations is helping bridge the information gaps in an organization. Mr. Nazer presented the status and applicability of the ISA 106 procedural automation standard for improving efficiency and safety in continuous process plants.
"Do It Right the First Time"
Cliff Pederson, formerly with Suncor and now an independent consultant, discussed automation with the future in mind. He shared that automation systems have a core operational role with respect to the status and control of the process, but highlighted the business role as the root information source of the enterprise's health. To that end, Mr. Pederson emphasized the importance of considering how automation fulfills its business obligations and mitigates the differences in disparate system lifecycles.
