AI systems with advanced intelligence could represent a risk to society and further advancement should be carefully managed, according to the open letter released by the Future of Life Institute, a non-profit
organization dedicated to researching the impact of transformative technologies. Machine learning tools, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, have sparked an arms race to develop ever more powerful alternatives that creators and regulators cannot fully understand or control. At the same time, technology companies are cutting down the size of their AI ethics and supervision teams.
The letter urges AI creators, industry leaders, and policymakers to implement a temporary pause on the development of AI systems that are more powerful than GPT-4. AI laboratories, independent experts, and governments should use this pause to develop a shared protocol to ensure the technology is used responsibly. The letter has been signed by technology leaders, such as Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and others. It is unclear if this push would affect the many industries that utilize AI technology in their business.
As AI systems approach human-level competence at complex tasks, the letter poses several questions: Should jobs be automated away from human hands? Should we actively create technologies that will obsolete and replace us? The Future of Life Institute asserts that these questions should not be answered solely by the technology leaders who wield these tools.
Necessary steps identified by the institute include the creation of regulatory authorities dedicated to AI, oversight and tracking of AI systems, a robust auditing and certification ecosystem, liability for AI-caused harm, public funding for technical AI safety research, and well-resourced institutions for coping with the potential disruptions AI could cause.
