Overview
Sustainability remains one of the largest business challenges and imperatives for industrial end users. ARC recently hosted a webinar describing the concepts outlined in our new series of deliverables entitled “Industrial Sustainability Strategies Playbook: Integrating People, Processes, and Platforms/ Technologies for Success." The webinar provided several practical strategies to implement and enhance sustainability within your organization, all drawn from the playbook, which is designed to assist end users in the successful implementation of their industrial sustainability strategies.
ARC explored key roles in sustainability, leadership’s role in fostering a sustainable culture, stakeholder engagement, and designing effective training programs. We also discussed sustainable process design, resource efficiency, supply chain sustainability, and the latest sustainability technologies. Learning objectives for the webinar included:
- Understanding key roles and leadership strategies in sustainability initiatives.
- Implementing sustainable process designs and improving resource efficiency.
- Developing effective stakeholder engagement and communication methods.
- Leveraging emerging technologies to enhance sustainability performance.
As the global business environment rapidly evolves, sustainability has become a critical lever for long-term competitiveness and resilience. The ARC Industrial Sustainability Strategies Playbook: Integrating People, Processes, and Platforms/Technologies offers a strategic framework for executives and senior leaders to align sustainability with organizational objectives. The Playbook consists of three modules, each providing detailed strategies to implement and improve sustainability performance:
- Organizing People and Skillsets
- Processes, Procedures, and Product Design
- Platforms and Technologies
Sustainability Challenges and Opportunities
Sustainability programs are being implemented worldwide. According to ARC’s most recent Digital Transformation, Sustainability, and Technology Survey, 50 percent of respondents indicated that they had a corporate sustainability program and strategy with clear, focused targets, priorities, and key performance indicators.

Top sustainability challenges for industrial end users can also be grouped into people, process, and platform/technology-related issues. Measuring and tracking performance is the number one challenge, followed by dealing with an aging and faulty infrastructure. On the people side, lack of correct in-house skills and expertise was a major issue, along with cross departmental collaboration.
Is sustainability good for business? ARC’s prior research found a common theme for all three segments of our webinar—namely, the urgent need for businesses to leverage the value sustainability can provide as our world becomes increasingly complex in responding to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. It is clear that the vast majority of organizations have recognized for some time now that sustainability has positive effects and business benefits that are overwhelmingly stronger than any negative impacts.
