The CEO of Cerilon, Nico Duursema, will be presenting “Cerilon – Energy Transition Leaders” as an executive speaker at the 2025 ARC Forum in Orlando, Florida, from February 10-13, 2025. Please join us at the Forum to hear this exciting story, which demonstrates a practical, near-term technological application addressing one of the world’s most urgent challenges.

Energy transition is an important topic in the COG industries. Energy transition is a shift from one predominant energy source to another or a mixture of others. This is not a new phenomenon. The transition from one energy source to another has evolved in conjunction with basic human existence. The initial source of energy can be traced back to man’s use of fire by burning firewood. As humankind evolved, it found an alternative source of carbon in the form of coal. This source of fuel was more compact and portable and became a primary component of steam-driven machinery such as locomotion and electrical turbines. In the 19th century, a liquid source of fuel was discovered. Because of its energy density and ease of recovery and processing, oil became the primary source of energy and energy-related products and services. Over the past century, alternative energy sources like wind, hydroelectric, and nuclear power have emerged. However, they have not offered enough economic justification to drive a complete transformation of the energy market dynamics.

This energy market position has been challenged most recently starting in the 1970’s as the topic of climate change caused by greenhouse gases emerged as a serious global threat. Coal or oil, much like their early predecessor wood, produces energy by burning carbon molecules with a byproduct being Carbon Dioxide (CO2). Reporting by USA EPA (2021) estimates that CO2 makes up 80-85 percent of greenhouse gas emissions and is directly associated with fears around global warming. In response to this global threat, numerous nations convened in Paris in 2015 to collectively define the scope of the issue and outline actions to address it, culminating in the Paris Climate Agreement.

Today, both governmental and commercial entities are addressing complex challenges in mitigating climate change, with the oil and gas industry being a key focus. As both consumers and producers of energy and energy-related products and services, this sector has a significantly vested interest in the outcomes. To this end, various commercial enterprises are researching and investing in solutions to move toward a viable path to the next phase of energy transition. A key leader in the energy transition is Cerilon, a Canada-based company.

Backed by private equity, which strongly supports this initiative, Cerilon has introduced a comprehensive commercial strategy aligned with the Paris Accords. The strategy aims to deliver near-term energy alternatives to oil-based products such as low-sulfur diesel, naphtha, and base oils by utilizing stranded or underutilized natural gas sources. To accomplish these sustainability goals, Cerilon is committed to accelerating energy transition by investing in proven gas to liquids facilities operated in a highly efficient and environmentally friendly manner. To achieve these objectives, Cerilon is utilizing best-in-class licensed GTL technologies, which operate with advanced automation and real-time information processing. This approach delivers top 10 percent performance in areas such as asset utilization, equipment reliability, raw material yield, and product quality.
