As we gear up for the release of our latest ARC Advisory Group Report on Industrial-grade Data Fabrics, the need for a unified and well-governed industrial data layer has never been more apparent. At the recent ARC Advisory Group Industry Leadership Forum in Orlando, I had the distinct pleasure of hosting a session that dove deep into this critical topic.

I was especially pleased to welcome John Harrington, Chief Product Officer and Co-Founder of HighByte—an innovative leader in Industrial DataOps—along with some of its customers to our session at the ARC Advisory Group Forum. HighByte is playing a key role in helping industrial organizations address the complex challenge of integrating diverse OT and IT data sources, a fundamental aspect of building strong Industrial-grade Data Fabrics. His insights, along with those of HighByte's customers, offer valuable real-world validation for the concepts we are exploring in our upcoming research.

Afterward, I had the opportunity to sit down with John for a brief but highly insightful interview. It was 10 minutes well spent for anyone interested in Industrial DataOps!

Key Insights from Our Conversation

For those who couldn't join us at the ARC Advisory Group Forum, here's a bulleted summary of key insights you’ll glean from this 10-minute interview:

  • Industrial DataOps is a Critical Enabler for Industrial AI: Effective data operations are foundational for successful AI initiatives in industrial environments.

  • Data Quality and Governance are Paramount in the Industrial Space: Ensuring data trust and reliability is a major challenge that Industrial DataOps is designed to tackle head-on.

  • Industrial Data Strategy is Evolving from Application-Centric to Data-Centric: Companies are recognizing the value of a holistic data strategy that transcends individual applications.

  • Architectural Patterns like Data Fabrics, Data Mesh, and Unified Namespace are Gaining Traction: These approaches aim to solve the complexities of managing and utilizing diverse industrial data.

  • Industrial Organizations are Increasingly Focused on Leveraging AI for Tangible Business Outcomes in 2025: Predictive maintenance and improved operational insights are key areas of interest.

  • Bridging the IT-OT Gap Remains a Significant Hurdle: Companies like HighByte are crucial in providing solutions that facilitate seamless data flow between these historically siloed domains.

Now, let's delve deeper into the key topics John and I explored during our conversation.

The Intrinsic Link Between Industrial DataOps and AI

We began our discussion by exploring the essential link between Industrial DataOps and the rapidly evolving field of Industrial AI. As ARC research consistently emphasizes, while AI holds immense promise for transforming industrial operations, its success hinges on high-quality, accessible, and well-governed data. John effectively explained how Industrial DataOps establishes this critical foundation through essential practices and technologies. Without robust data operations—covering data collection, cleansing, contextualization, and delivery—AI initiatives risk succumbing to the "garbage in, garbage out" dilemma.

Tackling the Data Quality and Governance Challenge

Next, we delved into the ongoing challenges of data quality and governance in industrial organizations. The vast volume and diversity of data generated across OT systems, compounded by long-standing data silos, present significant obstacles. John highlighted how HighByte’s solutions address these issues by offering tools for data modeling, standardization, and secure data flow—ensuring a reliable source of data. This trusted data is essential not only for AI and analytics but also for enhancing overall operational performance.

The Necessary Shift Toward a Data-Centric Strategy

A key part of our discussion focused on the shifting data strategies within industrial companies. Traditionally, data has been confined within individual applications such as ERP, MES, and SCADA, limiting its accessibility and cross-functional use. However, the growing demand for advanced AI applications and deeper operational insights is driving a shift toward more data-centric approaches. John insightfully noted that the increasing number of data sources and targets in modern industrial environments creates a "network effect" that quickly becomes unmanageable without a unified data strategy. This strategy must go beyond data movement to also address governance, security, and effective utilization across the organization.

Architectural Patterns for Modern Industrial Data Management

Our conversation naturally transitioned to the emerging architectural patterns designed to address these complex data management challenges, including Industrial Data Fabrics, Data Mesh, and Unified Namespace. John explained how Industrial DataOps plays a critical role in shaping a broader Industrial Data Fabric. These architectural approaches are aimed at dismantling data silos and establishing a more unified and accessible data layer across the enterprise. In particular, the Unified Namespace serves as a central nervous system for industrial data, enabling seamless communication and data sharing between disparate systems.

Customer Demand for AI-Driven Business Value in 2025

Looking ahead to 2025, I was eager to understand which AI-driven outcomes HighByte’s customers are prioritizing. John noted that while traditional insights and analytics remain valuable, there is a growing emphasis on AI applications that deliver concrete business impact. Key use cases include predictive maintenance, anomaly detection, and the use of computer vision for quality control. This perspective aligns with ARC’s view that industrial organizations are shifting from AI experimentation to the deployment of solutions that offer a fast and measurable return on investment.

Overcoming the IT-OT Divide with Industrial DataOps

Finally, we highlighted the ongoing challenge of bridging the gap between IT and OT systems. John eloquently described how HighByte positions itself as a key connector between these traditionally separate domains, offering solutions that not only recognize the complexities of OT data but also align with IT security and governance standards. This seamless integration is essential for developing the robust Industrial-grade Data Fabrics needed to fully harness the potential of the Industrial AI (R)Evolution.

We invite you once again to watch the full, in-depth conversation on the ARC Advisory Group's YouTube Channel to gain a richer understanding of these critical topics.

Quotes

To leave you with some of the most memorable quotes from our discussion:

John Harrington: "So we need to put something in place, and we need to create a strategy around data, not just around applications, but around data. And how do we move data, and how do we use data? How do we govern it? How do we work with it? Who can work with it?"

John Harrington: “DataOps, Data Fabric… We've got Unified Namespace, and we've got Data Mesh. Those are the different architectural patterns that all kind of address this data challenge, which AI is driving."

John Harrington: "The funny thing is data strategy is something that most companies haven't had in the industrial space. Now, in the IT space, they've probably had it for a long time."

Our conversation with John Harrington at the ARC Forum 2025 highlighted the critical role of Industrial DataOps in empowering industrial organizations to harness AI effectively.

As we finalize our upcoming report on Industrial-grade Data Fabrics, the insights shared by John and HighByte reinforce our belief that breaking down traditional IT, OT, and ET silos through strong data management practices is essential to unlocking the full potential of the Industrial AI (R)Evolution.

Stay tuned for our report for a deeper dive into this transformative landscape!
