Red Hat, a global provider of open-source software solutions, has announced Red Hat Edge Manager, a new product designed for the centralized management of edge devices at scale. The offering aims to streamline the oversight of edge computing infrastructure and applications through a unified console.

The solution emphasizes end-to-end security and applicability to diverse edge environments ranging from retail point-of-sale systems to industrial machinery in remote locations. Edge Manager was developed to address challenges inherent in managing distributed edge deployments, such as connectivity demands, hardware heterogeneity, and operational complexity.

Key features of Red Hat Edge Manager include:

  • Fleet Management: Policy-based deployment of applications and infrastructure for managing single or multi-node configurations.

  • Skills Gap Mitigation: Simplified management for users at edge locations that may possess less IT expertise.

  • Proactive Device Insights: Customizable alerts for monitoring critical device resources and capturing metrics and logs.

  • Hardened Device Communications: Utilizes mutual Transport Layer Security (mTLS) for agent service communication. Establishes a consistent security posture that enables the prevention of impersonation or duplication of device identities.

  • Flexible Management Options: Supports on-premises deployment, offering an alternative to cloud-based solutions.

  • Resilient Agent Architecture: Agent-based approach for scalable device management, intended to maintain connectivity in varying network conditions.

  • Lifecycle Management: Capabilities for secure device onboarding, decommissioning, and application/OS upgrades.

Red Hat Edge Manager is optimized for container-centric workflows and will support Red Hat Enterprise Linux image mode. It is designed to manage containerized workloads across Podman, Docker, and Kubernetes, allowing for the definition and deployment of configurations and applications to individual devices or entire fleets with automated rollouts and real-time visibility.

Red Hat Edge Manager is currently available as a technology preview.
