Celebrating five decades of CENTUM, Yokogawa unveils a future-ready DCS architecture designed to integrate AI, digital twins, and advanced control intelligence.

At a press conference held by Yokogawa Electric on June 3, 2025, the company reported that its distributed control system (DCS), first introduced to the world in 1975, has reached its 50th anniversary. The event showcased technological innovations and solutions developed over the past five decades, along with Yokogawa’s forward-looking DCS strategy. As the first step toward realizing this strategy, the launch of the latest CENTUM VP R7 was announced. The press conference was held for the media in Japan, with similar events planned globally. Following the briefing, demonstrations and explanations of the latest solutions were conducted, offering attendees a deeper understanding of Yokogawa Electric’s vision for the future.

Speakers

  • Kazuhiko Takeoka: Senior Vice President, Head of Digital Solutions HQ

  • Mitsuhiro Yamamoto: Vice President and Executive Officer, Head of Systems Business Division, Digital Solutions HQ

  • Naoto Takano: General Manager, Marketing HQ, Intellectual Property & Design Center

CENTUM 50th Anniversary

Yokogawa’s CENTUM system controls plants across various industries, including oil refining, petrochemicals, high-performance chemicals, textiles, steel, pharmaceuticals, food, water, power, and gas. As a DCS, it features a distributed architecture that achieves both functional and risk distribution. Since its introduction in 1975, CENTUM has seen multiple enhancements and generational changes. The current CENTUM VP R6 is its ninth generation. Over the years, CENTUM has been deployed in more than 30,000 plants across over 100 countries.

Yokogawa Electric’s Strengths in Contributing to Sustainability

Yokogawa Electric leverages four key strengths to be a trusted partner in building a sustainable society and enhancing customer business performance through consulting and solutions (products, services, etc.):

  • Products and Systems: Robust, reliable systems including CI servers, digital twins, and advanced technologies such as autonomous control AI.

  • Service Network: A global service network operating 24/7/365.

  • Human Resources: Professionals dedicated to solving customer challenges, skilled in complex systems integration and team collaboration.

  • Track Record: High customer loyalty and strong reputation.

To address customers’ management issues and contribute to both a sustainable society and corporate growth, Yokogawa promotes “automation to autonomy in industry,” including work style innovation and stable, waste-free operations.

Design for Safety and Security Supporting Stable Operations

Human error accounts for the majority of serious industrial accidents, making it critical to address safety issues tied to human factors. From the first generation of CENTUM, Yokogawa has adopted ergonomics-based design—starting with the keyboard layout—to address these concerns through thoughtful design. By visualizing the situational awareness of experienced operators and offering consulting services for graphic operation design, Yokogawa supports the transfer of operational know-how.

CENTUM Future: Toward Autonomous Operations

Today’s industrial landscape is shaped by complex, overlapping global influences—rising nationalism, shifting capitalism, geopolitical risks, climate change, resource scarcity, rapid technological advancement led by AI, aging workforces, and labor shortages in developed economies. In plant operations, these environmental shifts, coupled with aging equipment and increased security risks, make problem-solving more difficult.

Yokogawa’s response to these challenges is the realization of autonomous operations through CENTUM. These operations are designed so that the system itself learns and adapts to maintain optimal, safe plant operations without human intervention. This approach offers customers:

  • Stable operations, unaffected by external change.

  • Operational optimization beyond human capabilities.

  • Continuous transfer of knowledge and experience.

CENTUM's roadmap to autonomy includes three key stages:

  • Data-driven operational support = Automated

  • Operational experience with future foresight = Semi-autonomous

  • Plant operations with no human intervention = Autonomous

CENTUM VP R7 Released on June 3, 2025–The First Step Toward CENTUM Future

The concept behind CENTUM VP R7 is “Unchanging value and new innovation.”

  • Unchanging value encompasses reliability, stability, continuity, robust security, and a comprehensive engineering service system.

  • New innovation includes expanded control and monitoring, predictive detection through process condition awareness, and plant operations enhanced by experiential knowledge and AI.

CENTUM VP R7 aggregates a wide range of data, visualizes plant-wide conditions, and expands automated operational scope to deliver safer and more secure operations. It identifies process-specific anomalies, predicts deviations, and enables proactive responses, thereby improving stability and energy efficiency. With AI-supported decision-making and control, R7 reduces operator burden and ensures long-term operational stability. Yokogawa aims to realize fully autonomous plant operations by integrating deep domain expertise with advanced technologies.

Conclusion

To mark the 50th anniversary of CENTUM, Yokogawa Electric announced its future direction—autonomous operations under the CENTUM Future vision. Simultaneously, it launched CENTUM VP R7, the 10th generation of its DCS, representing a concrete step toward autonomy. Yokogawa remains committed to delivering sustainable, optimized operations without compromising on reliability, stability, or continuity, contributing to long-term customer success.

Today, DCS manufacturers face a rapidly evolving business environment. With IT advancements accelerating, control systems are increasingly integrating IT-derived functions. These include IT/OT convergence, Industrial IoT, active use of edge computing, calls for openness via OPA, virtualization, MPT standards, and digital twin and simulation-based lifecycle solutions. AI and software-defined automation are also gaining traction.

Not only are major vendors from Europe, the US, and China pursuing these innovations, but software firms previously unrelated to automation are entering the space. While Yokogawa has a clear vision for autonomous operations, its public disclosures regarding specific new technology initiatives have so far been limited. When asked, company representatives stated that detailed announcements are forthcoming. Early communication on these technologies, solutions, and a roadmap that clearly outlines user value will be highly anticipated.
