The collaboration leverages Gemini Enterprise to enhance productivity and address labor shortages across social infrastructure industries.

Hitachi announced the expansion of its strategic alliance with Google Cloud to develop and utilize AI agents that help to accelerate operational transformation for frontline workers in various industrial and infrastructure sectors, including energy, railways, and manufacturing lines. Building on its existing collaboration focused on software modernization and AI utilization, this new phase extends further into the operational technology (OT) domain.
Gemini, Google Cloud’s multimodal AI, can process text, images, audio, and video simultaneously, making it well suited for frontline applications that involve physical data, such as equipment and product inspection. Using Gemini Enterprise, users without specialized AI expertise can create task-specific AI agents through no-code interfaces, enabling more streamlined workflows and improved efficiency.
To support this initiative, Hitachi has established the “Agent Factory,” its AI agent development environment. By leveraging Google Cloud technology, Hitachi aims to help enhance this environment for faster and easier development of AI agents tailored to on-site operations. Combining Google Cloud’s advanced AI capabilities with Hitachi’s domain expertise and data governance frameworks allows for safer utilization of sensitive data in complex or confidential industrial settings.
Key Focus Areas of the Collaboration
AI Agent Factory: A dedicated environment to design and deploy AI agents for frontline use.
No-Code Creation: Enables employees without technical expertise to build task-specific AI tools.
Secure Data Utilization: Combines Google Cloud AI with Hitachi’s governance frameworks for safer handling of confidential data.
Frontline Transformation: Targets critical sectors, such as energy, railways, and manufacturing to help address workforce shortages and improve efficiency.
This collaboration marks a milestone in realizing Hitachi’s Lumada 3.0 vision, which integrates AI and domain knowledge to help advance industrial and infrastructure sustainability.
As part of its “Customer Zero” approach, Hitachi will first apply these AI agents within its own group companies before extending proven use cases to customers. GlobalLogic Inc., a Hitachi subsidiary and a key Google Cloud partner, will play an integral role in deploying Gemini Enterprise internally and externally, helping to democratize AI agent development and foster innovation across industries.
Initial Use Case: AI-Assisted Equipment Inspection
Hitachi has begun a technical proof-of-concept at Hitachi Power Solutions Co., Ltd., focused on maintenance of vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs) within power distribution panels. These inspections, traditionally conducted with paper-based checklists, are being digitized using AI agents powered by Gemini Enterprise. The agents compare pre- and post-maintenance images to detect potential errors, such as misaligned bolts or incorrect wiring, helping to improve inspection accuracy and operational reliability.
Maintenance staff can upload images directly and the AI agent automatically highlights discrepancies, helping to reduce manual double-checking and human error. Designed with simpler, natural language prompts and annotated images, the system allows on-site teams to make their own updates and refinements without requiring extensive technical expertise.
Future plans include expanding AI agent capabilities to analyze video data, verify correct procedural adherence, and automatically generate maintenance reports. These advancements are expected to help improve safety, support skill transfer, and reduce workloads across maintenance and manufacturing operations.
