Hitachi Energy launched AxoniQ, a portfolio of solutions for multi-terminal direct current systems, designed to support dynamic power flow, congestion management, fault isolation, and grid resilience.

Hitachi Energy announced the launch of AxoniQ, a portfolio of solutions for multi-terminal direct current (MTDC) systems.

As global electricity demand accelerates, MTDC systems are becoming increasingly important for supporting more secure, affordable, and sustainable power grids. As renewable energy deployment grows and power systems become more interconnected, MTDC systems help to manage congestion and improve resilience by allowing dynamic power flow between multiple terminals and across different energy markets.

By connecting multiple power sources and demand points, MTDC grids help to enable electricity to be directed where it is needed most. They can also help to support faster planning, procurement, and execution of grid projects.

The AxoniQ portfolio combines advanced power electronics and control technologies. It includes:

  • AxoniQ Protect: Supports DC fault interruption in less than three milliseconds and enables selective fault isolation by disconnecting only the affected section of the DC grid.

  • AxoniQ Connect: Provides a modular DC switching station to connect new terminals and structure the grid into protection zones.

  • AxoniQ Control: Maintains voltage stability and power balance, supports more optimized power flow, and enables more flexible energy exchange.

Together, these solutions are designed to help support real-time power rerouting, rapid fault isolation, continuity of power supply, and reduced impact on the wider grid during disturbances.

AxoniQ is part of Hitachi Energy’s Grid-enSure portfolio, which supports power system stabilization by helping to strengthen transmission, manage frequency variations and system voltage, and address capacity constraints.

According to Hitachi Energy, AxoniQ has been researched and developed for over a decade, with work focused on supporting future HVDC systems that are compatible and interoperable by design.
