The challenge is compounded by concentrated supply, limited substitution options, and the fact that germanium is largely recovered as a byproduct of other industrial processes. For logistics and manufacturing organizations, this reinforces the need to look beyond shipment volume and annual spend when assessing supply-chain risk. The more important question is what products, facilities, and customer commitments become impossible when a critical material or component is no longer available.
