At ARC's European Industry Forum 2016, Bert van Baelen, System Coordinator at Kaneka, will present the implementation of engineering projects in AIMS (asset information management system) at chemical processing plant of Kaneka Belgium
Kaneka was founded in 1976 and is part of the chemical process industry. At Kaneka, most projects are related to replacing or modifying the existing legacy production units. Engineering projects require a good knowledge of the existing facilities and a well maintained documentation system with practical drawings. The absence or incompleteness of these documents was becoming more and more of a problem. Together with the increasing regulatory requirements, this was a driver to introduce an asset information management system.
When we took a closer look at our technical documentation, a number of issues were identified: information contamination (no indication of revision or status, information was not saved in one location, meaning there was not 'one version of the truth'), information complexity (no information standard) and low efficiency (too much administrative rework and search time). Our organization, we found, was not sharing its knowledge efficiently.
These challenges were overcome by implementing AIMS, the usage of which guarantees legal compliance, safe operation and cost effectiveness (profitability), by operating, maintaining and changing a plant based on 'as built' information. There is one go-to-system with 'one version of the truth' and work or administration which does not add value has been eliminated. Information search time was reduced. By gathering, storing and sharing information, we make sure knowledge is communicated between people and departments. And, last but not least: we have reduced engineering cost and contractor collaboration cost.
