Problem: Factory acceptance test (FAT) often becomes a scheduling nightmare that delays projects, shipments and revenue, and can cause penalties. Particularly for highly engineered and complex products, FAT is often used to assure the product meets specifications and contractual requirements before shipment. When out of specification, additional tuning or rework can be done in the factory. In this case story, FAT of power transmission products involves multiple tests in chambers with high voltage and temperature – which can be dangerous and requires safety precautions for participants – don’t want to injure the customer.
FAT occurs in the presence of the customer or occasionally a third party inspection agency. With a global customer base, this process requires travel by the customer, and - in the case of a failure - repeated travel. Delays can result in penalties and/or project costs going beyond budget.
Solution: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) designed, developed and deployed a cloud-based Industrial IoT solution to monitor the acceptance test remotely. This involved integrating multiple media types including video broadcast and recording, computer screen sharing, real-time camera streaming, and display of product specifications for comparison. The video feed goes to a cloud-based application, and distributed to the clients. An event management system schedules the tests, and notifies the customer of their time slots and related documentation. The solution has been applied in factories at eight sites in five countries. Now, the acceptance test process steps are viewed by customers anywhere in the world.
Benefits: The electronics manufacturer’s shipments and revenue streams became more predictable. Scheduling of the inspections became much easier with more reliable timing. Its customer satisfaction improved by eliminating costly travel.
