After reading a recent article highlighting Total’s supercomputer, Pangea, boosting its computing power to rank among the top 10 most powerful computers, public or private, worldwide in the TOP500 ranking, I am amazed at the somewhat Jekyll and Hyde relationship that the oil & gas industry has with analytics, high performance computing (HPC) and IIoT. IOCs, NOCs and even some savvy E&P players have been leveraging HPC to do some amazing things with data in the quest to find that next “big elephant” of a formation that will produce millions of barrel of oil (and/or gas). Yet one of the biggest partial myths is that the oil & gas industry is comprised of a bunch of Luddites using pen and paper, excel spreadsheets, etc. to conduct their operations. I highlighted the word partial since it is true that there are still some (many?) companies not leveraging the full benefits of HPC, automation, analytics and IIoT to combat the current plague of low oil prices.
Some companies such as Total, as well as many other NOCs and IOCs, have been embracing HPC and analytics for decades. “We tripled Pangea’s computing power in just two years. In the era of big data, state-of-the-art data-intensive computing is a competitive advantage. This power will help us to improve our performance and to reduce our costs,” Arnaud Breuillac, president of Total’s E&P division, said. According to Total, Pangea is a decision-support tool used for exploration and field management. The reasons for investing in the latest IT technologies in the market are to improve the accuracy of subsurface imaging, optimize the development and production of Total’s fields, and save time, by shortening the duration of studies.
We know there are several other reasons as well that companies such as Total and others in oil & gas invest in HPC, analytics and IIoT-enabled solutions. For those that have been following this blog site, the reasons are well known. We would love to hear from other owner operators and E&P companies on what some of those reasons are or, more importantly, what are some of the challenges they are trying to solve in order to discuss how HPC, analytics, and IIoT-enabled solutions may be deployed to help drive operational excellence.
