Smart cities and infrastructure both face major cybersecurity-related challenges. Today’s rapid adoption of IoT technologies, convergence of IT and OT environments, drive toward ubiquitous connectivity, and resource constraints are all major challenges when it comes to implementing a good cybersecurity program for smart cities and infrastructure.

“Certifiable autonomy” is a key regulatory requirement for using pilot-less drones to transport people or even packages.  In fact, operating drones without pilots faces some of the same obstacles faced by self-driving cars, but autonomous drones could be here sooner than you think.

The Open Process Automation Forum (OPAF), a forum of The Open Group, has stressed the need for standardization at level 2 to help reduce lifecycle costs. What, then, can industry expect in the future from this level in the automation architecture?  How should end users prepare for basic control innovation? 

The 2019 ARC Industry Forum took place in Orlando on February 4 to 7, 2019. One session titled “IoT Network Edge Infrastructure and Devices” focused on the hot topic of edge infrastructure and edge computing.  A highlight of this session was a presentation by Rick Morse, Vice President Digital Solutions of Rexnord Power Transmission, explained the Industrial IoT development path. 

In the years ahead, scientific breakthroughs will lead to new technologies that will help define  the new manufacturing with the next generation of products and the associated manufacturing processes.  Physics, chemistry, materials science, biology, and mathematical simulation will all come together to enable manufacturers to design and build lighter, stronger, and more adaptable products.

Compared to other consumer-focused industries, pharmaceutical and biotechnology have traditionally been slow to adopt emerging technologies.  That said, the digital transformation of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries has already started, as many companies are developing roadmaps for digital transformation, and many have already started to adopt these newer digital technologies.

ARC Advisory Group had the opportunity to attend the 5th Annual Well Site Automation Conference held in Houston, Texas back in January. About 250 people attended the conference and there were about 15 exhibitors.
