ABB and Red Hat have announced an expanded collaboration focused on developing automation systems for industrial IT. The initiative aims to unify ABB’s automation expertise and Red Hat’s open-source solutions to enable more secure and modular deployment of control applications within process industries.
Red Hat platforms are intended to provide a consistent foundation for process automation and industrial controls, addressing the security and uptime requirements typical of industrial environments. ABB's process automation system architecture features two distinct environments: a control environment designed for real-time management of critical processes and a digital environment for scalable deployment of digital solutions.
Previously, the companies focused on the digital environment to facilitate the deployment of analytics, AI, and cloud applications without impacting core control operations. The expanded collaboration now extends to the control environment. This broader scope aims to deliver enhanced operational consistency and stability for demanding security and process requirements.
The integrated approach, built on Red Hat platforms, is intended to allow customers to introduce innovations incrementally while aiming to protect operational integrity and existing investments. Red Hat technologies are also positioned to provide a foundation for system lifecycle services within the process automation system.
The collaboration aligns with global industry standards and frameworks and supports secure adoption across diverse US multi-vendor environments.
