ARC Report Abstract

Executive Overview
ARC Advisory Group's quarterly Automation Index summarizes the current state of automation markets to enable participants to learn from past developments and provide a forecast based on major variables such as investment, consumer spending, GDP, and other leading economic indicators. ARC bases its index on publically available data of major automation companies, including published revenues. Each vendor is included within its region of origin. Extreme values, such as those resulting from acquisitions, are excluded, and all raw data is seasonally adjusted. ARC's methodology, based on a Paasche Index, calculates the growth from one period to the next based on the data available in the initial period.

It is always hard to quantify direct and indirect impacts on many markets. Dropping oil prices and fluctuating exchange rates both have positive and negative impacts across markets. Other developments, such as the current growth in the automotive industry, are easier to quantify.

Overall, the Automation Index has contracted in the last quarter, while it was slightly positive throughout 2014. In addition to two big industries – oil & gas and electric power – the exchange rate effects in Europe and Japan contributed to negative overall growth. Positive signs keep coming out of Asia, including Japan, where the market, measured in Yen, continues to increase.

Looking ahead, oil price development, which has different impacts on upstream and downstream industries; economic stimulus packages; and the US economic recovery, all remain key variables in the future development of the Automation Index.

Global Development
Over the last years, ARC frequently reported that the development in the regions have been subject to very different dynamics. Ultimately, this lead to a situation in which growth and contracting developments have balanced out. Currently, the three main regions, North America, Europe, and Asia, are nearly growing in parallel, and what is more diverse are the developments across the different industry levels.
