Here's an end-of-the-year tip for you: Watch for some upcoming research by my colleague,
David White, who is putting the finishing touches on some interesting research about the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Among the findings, it turns out that about a third of industrial companies are already using or developing IIoT projects, and another 25% are actively evaluating IIoT projects. In my view, that's a huge number that developed rapidly, but we still think it's only the tip of the iceberg. I believe that early successes will drive even greater uptake and more rapid growth of digitization inside not only these companies, but in all the rest as well.
The data also shows that companies who are more mature in their approach to operational decision-making, asset management, IT infrastructure, and a couple other dimensions are also more likely to be leaders in offering connected products and services.
Parts of David's research will appear in next month's
Plant Services magazine, and in various ARC reports. Several other ARC analysts will also be publishing IIoT-related research in the near future:
Harry Forbes on network communications,
Peter Reynolds on process analytics,
Dick Slansky on design considerations for products and production systems, and
Ralph Rio on asset performance management.
