In covering the rapid rise in industrial focus on the Internet of Things over the past year, a fascinating pattern has emerged. Seemingly every week, I talk to another person who just 'discovered' IIoT (or I4.0), then proceeds to raise objections they imagine no one has ever thought about: "Cybersecurity concerns will doom it;" "Can't happen without standards;" "Nothing really different, it's just marketing hype;" "It's technology for technology's sake;" "It's too complicated for users to tackle;" "We've done this without Big Data for years." This list goes on and on. But despite this phenomenon, real use cases are emerging, solutions are coming to market, and industrial companies are beginning to use IIoT to improve operating performance, reduce unplanned downtime, improve logistics, or improve safety and risk management.

IIoT suppliers, like Intel, are taking a much more direct approach to knocking down objections – by providing solutions. Hoping to accelerate adoption and innovation in IoT, Intel just announced its release of a platform, products and an expanded ecosystem of companies: http://intel.ly/12JKdKI

According to the press release, the Intel IoT Platform offers a defined, repeatable foundation for how devices will connect and deliver trusted data to the cloud. "Intel is also delivering a roadmap of integrated hardware and software products to support the Intel IoT Platform. Spanning from edge devices out to the cloud, the roadmap includes API management and service creation software, edge-to-cloud connectivity and analytics, intelligent gateways, and a full line of scalable IA processors. Security is fundamental to the roadmap with both dedicated security products and security features embedded into hardware and software products."

As an integral part of the newly launched Intel IoT Platform, Wind River unveiled the Wind River Edge Management System, a cloud-based Internet of Things (IoT) platform that enables devices to connect securely to a centralized console, providing device management and solution extensibility. Edge Management System is a pre-integrated technology stack running from the device to the cloud that has been validated to work out-of-the-box with all Intel IoT Platform components, as well as other IoT vendors' components.

Accenture, Booz Allen Hamilton, Capgemini, Dell, HCL, NTT DATA, SAP, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Wipro and others are joining together with Intel to develop and deploy solutions using their building blocks on the Intel IoT Platform.
