Last week, ARC Advisory Group attended the National Retail Federation (NRF) Big Show. As the name suggests, this conference is the big retail show of the year, with more than 33,000 attendees flocking to the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City. Every year, two or three main themes define the show. Over the past seven years, those themes have not changed too much. Typically, they revolve around multi/cross/omni-channel, mobile, Big Data, the Cloud, social media, and/or customer experience management. This year was no different, as three main themes appeared to emerge at the show: inventory centralization, Big Data, and the Cloud.
Each of these themes plays a crucial role in the ever-evolving landscape of omni-channel retail. While each has its own challenges, harnessing these technologies can have a profound impact on the business, from improving inventory accuracy and on-time order deliveries to driving improved customer satisfaction and lowering total cost of ownership.
Inventory Availability Fuels Omni-Channel
The big driver for omni-channel commerce is inventory availability. If customers cannot get the product they want, when they want it, they will certainly look somewhere else. Retailers have made great strides in providing clearer inventory availability and visibility to their customers. This is a necessity with today's multi-channel shoppers.
