PTC released Codebeamer 3.3, Codebeamer AI 1.2, and Pure Variants 7.3, adding new capabilities for product configuration management, requirements search, traceability, and change management across complex engineering environments.

PTC expanded its application lifecycle management (ALM) portfolio with the release of Codebeamer 3.3, Codebeamer AI 1.2, and Pure Variants 7.3. The updates focus on two recurring engineering challenges: maintaining consistent changes across multiple product variants and locating relevant requirements and lifecycle information across complex development environments.

The releases build on PTC’s use of Codebeamer as a system of record for software development and requirements management, particularly in industries, such as automotive, medical technology, aerospace and defense, and federal environments. The new functionality helps to strengthen configuration and change management while introducing AI-assisted search with additional controls over how data is indexed and processed.

Codebeamer 3.3 Adds Delta Merge and Stream Management

Codebeamer 3.3 introduces Delta Merge, which allows an approved change to be carried across related product variants rather than requiring engineering teams to manually reproduce the same modification in each configuration.

The release also adds a Streams Tab for tracking product variant lines and role-based Stream Management Permissions that control who can approve and manage changes. PTC has also expanded Codebeamer’s integration with its Windchill product lifecycle management solution and broader digital thread environment.

These capabilities are particularly relevant for organizations developing multiple versions of increasingly software-intensive products. As configurations multiply, managing requirements, tests, changes, and approvals independently across each variant can increase engineering effort and create inconsistencies.

PTC has been steadily expanding Codebeamer’s variant management capabilities. Codebeamer 3.0 introduced scalable working sets, branching, and enhanced traceability, while the 3.2 release helped to further strengthen digital thread integration and lifecycle visibility.

Codebeamer AI 1.2 Introduces Semantic Search

Codebeamer AI 1.2 adds an AI Search Assistant that uses semantic search to help interpret the meaning and intent of a query rather than relying solely on matching keywords.

The capability is intended to help engineers locate requirements and related information more efficiently across large ALM environments. This becomes increasingly important as engineering programs accumulate more extensive requirements, test cases, regulatory documentation, and product-specific configurations.

The release also introduces an Indexing Service that helps to provide greater control over how and where organizational data is processed. For regulated industries, this type of governance can be important when AI capabilities are applied to engineering and requirements information that may be subject to security, quality, or compliance controls.

The AI Search Assistant extends PTC’s broader development of AI capabilities within Codebeamer. Earlier releases introduced AI-assisted requirements and test-case development, while PTC has also worked with Microsoft and Volkswagen Group on generative AI capabilities intended to support requirements management.

Pure Variants 7.3 Extends Configuration Management

Pure Variants 7.3 introduces Stream Transformation, which converts a configured product variant into a working set linked to that specific configuration in Codebeamer.

Requirements within the working set can then reflect the features and values associated with the selected variant without requiring engineers to manually copy and adjust requirements for each configuration.

This tighter connection between product variability and requirements management is intended to help improve consistency across product families and reduce repetitive configuration work.

Pure Variants 7.3 has also been verified for compatibility with Codebeamer 3.3 and other engineering platforms, including IBM ELM, Jama Connect, Siemens Polarion, and PTC RV&S.

Connecting ALM, PLM, and the Digital Thread

The releases also reinforce PTC’s broader strategy of connecting ALM and PLM within what the company describes as the Intelligent Product Lifecycle.

As manufactured products incorporate more software, engineering organizations increasingly need to connect software requirements, configurations, testing, and releases with physical product structures and engineering changes. Integration between Codebeamer and Windchill is intended to help improve that traceability across the lifecycle.

ARC Advisory Group has identified tighter ALM and PLM integration as increasingly important as manufacturers develop more software-defined products. Connected lifecycle information helps organizations better understand how software requirements and releases relate to physical product configurations, engineering changes, quality processes, and regulatory requirements.

The latest Codebeamer, Codebeamer AI, and Pure Variants releases continue PTC’s effort to help address this complexity through stronger configuration management, traceability, and governed AI assistance. As software content and product variability continue to increase, the ability to manage changes consistently across configurations while retrieving the correct engineering context will become increasingly important for product development organizations.
