Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World was the thought-provoking theme of the recently concluded 48th World Economic Forum 2018 at Davos, Switzerland. Established in 1971 as a not-for-profit organization, this latest Forum saw the convergence of about 3,000 global, political, and business leaders to discuss the world’s problems and find shared solutions for a better future.
The global landscape has changed dramatically; geostrategic fissures have resurfaced on multiple fronts with political, economic and social ramifications. Consensus was that these fractures must not foster intolerance, indecision, and inaction. Spread across 400 sessions, the topics discussed at the WEF ranged from gender disparity and economic inequities, to fostering global collaboration and harmony. It was clear that at the intersection of technology, economics, and social imperatives is the Internet of Things (IoT)/digitalization that connects the physical and digital worlds. This technology-enabled Fourth Industrial Revolution (“Industrie 4.0”) has released enormous transformative power across industries and nations.
Perspectives of Shared Solutions
The WEF’s objective was to engage the delegates to understand different perspectives and focus on multiple agendas:
Global: Improve global governance through public-private participation
Geopolitical: Convene public- and private-sector leaders and defense, intelligence, and security experts to prepare for and respond to crisis situations
Economic: Support multi-stakeholder efforts to deliver sustainable and inclusive economic development
Regional and National: Examine in depth the social and economic transformations occurring in all regions of the world through informal interaction
Industry and Business: Redesign industry ecosystems and business models, particularly in the context of scientific, technological and policy transformations
Future: Share ideas, innovations and discoveries that will reshape global systems
