Is there a place for the Industrial Internet of Things in upstream oil and gas?

Let's see…

Lots of specialized assets to track and optimize - check

Remote operations - check

Large potential performance improvements from data at the edge - check

Potential to reduce non-productive time - check

Potential to leverage remote experts - check

Opportunity to improve safety and risk management - check

Opportunity to improve logistics - check

Ready access to network communications - hmmm

Culture open to change - hmmm

Operations IT technically mature - hmmm

There is a lot to be gained from Industrial Internet of Things in upstream oil and gas operations, but a few hurdles must be overcome.  None of the technical issues are showstoppers, and many argue that with oil prices low, now is the time to use some of these new technologies to improve performance and thereby margins.
