As we close out what can be characterized as a “challenging” year for most upstream oil & gas companies, I wanted to highlight my top five IIoT blogs related to upstream and midstream oil & gas and make some closing thoughts on what may come in 2016. I am sure everyone is sitting on the edge of their seats after opening up all their Xmas gifts and preparing for the upcoming New Year festivities…..so here they are:
- Big Data in Big Oil: How Shell Uses Analytics To Drive Business Success This blog’s popularity is not that surprising since it was one of my earlier blog posts, published back in May, and one that involves a major IOC such as Shell and summarizes data taken from a survey by Accenture and Microsoft highlighting a belief among a large number of respondents that leveraging Big Data, analytics, mobility and IIoT capabilities would increase value in their operations.
- Worth a look: an interesting IIoT solution for Artificial Lift This blog’s relative popularity is a little surprising since it was published later in August and involves a somewhat niche topic specific to upstream oil & gas in artificial lift. The blog post covers a unique solution from a company named Ambyint, not exactly a household name and is another factor in the somewhat surprising popularity.
- Oil Field Companies Take Note: Survival May Depend on IIoT This blog’s relative popularity is surprising in that it was only recently published in early December and has not enjoyed the benefit of “maturation”. I have to give credit to my colleague Greg Gorbach for the catchy title which no doubt helped grab some eyeballs along the way. However I believe the timeliness of low oil prices and the increasingly dire outcomes (i.e. layoffs > 250K, growing # of bankruptcies, etc.) of that phenomena make the title and its contents, which includes links to several of my other blogs, of greatest interest to readers.
- BP is Leveraging GE’s IIoT Enabled Systems and Sensors to Drive Efficiencies Following very close behind in the number four spot this blog highlights two household names in BP and GE Oil & Gas and was also published in June, thereby having time to “ripen”. It was one of the earlier real examples of a major oil IOC leveraging IIoT enabled solutions and going on record to talk about some of the positive results.
- BP Leveraging IIoT to Optimize Well Production Rounding out the top five this blog also involves BP leveraging some of GE’s IIoT enabled solutions to optimize its upstream oil & gas operations. This blog was posted just a couple of weeks after the 4th spot blog in July and also enjoyed being ripened.
What I found particularly interesting was that the sixth most read blog
Smart Sensors Are the “Tip of the Spear” for IIoT was published only two weeks ago was not that far behind in readership that one that was published five months earlier. Perhaps my blogs are just getting that much better or a growing share of the public is experiencing an unquenched thirst for all things IIoT. Regardless, I want to take the time to thank all those that took the time to read my blogs and for those few that took even more time to post comments.
In terms of my outlook for 2016, suffice to say I will be professionally pleasantly surprised (not at the gas pump however) if oil prices rise into the $50’s for any extended period of time and I expect to see greater M&A activity, a growing number of bankruptcies, and unfortunately more layoffs in the oil patch. I am also expecting to see a growing number of companies embracing IIoT enabled solutions as a means to lower their cost per boe and to improve their operational efficiencies and collaboration – both for internal and external ecosystems.
