It's worth taking a few minutes to explore GE Software's recent announcement about its 'Industrial Dojo,' built in collaboration with the Cloud Foundry Foundation. It marks an important step in advancing the next-generation approach to industrial software. According to the announcement, "By opening this Industrial Dojo, GE Software is enabling developers to better learn industrial intricacies by pairing with experienced developers, thereby greatly reducing the time-to-productivity for those new to a project. Through this program, GE is bolstering its commitment to open source development and Cloud Foundry, and ultimately promoting the next wave of industrial innovation."
Those following the company will remember that GE invested $105 million in Pivotal, and know that the GE Predix platform is based on Pivotal Cloud Foundry (PCF), a commercial version of the open source Platform-as-a-Service. PCF is an example of a multi-cloud next-gen platform.
The 21st century software solution is created by agile teams and rapid iteration development on an application platform delivered as a service. Instead of heavy monolithic apps running on servers, micro-services deal in data and analytics for the mobile user.
GE also announced that with Pivotal, they plan to create an open source “TCP Router” to direct non-HTTP protocols and better equip Cloud Foundry to connect industrial machines with IT networks. This will enable Cloud Foundry to be used in a variety of industrial applications and use cases. The TCP Router will provide support for various industrial protocols, eliminating the need to manage and scale these apps outside Cloud Foundry. In addition, the new Industrial Dojo will help bring other Industrial companies into this project.
